HIDEKI Yoshida

Artist / Photographer
Tokyo / NewYork

Hideki Yoshida was born in 1969 in Ibaraki prefecture, Japan. Yoshida majored in display design at the College of Art and Design of Musashino Art University in Tokyo. After graduation he joined TANSEISHA Co., Ltd. where he
was involved in the areas of food/drink product sales space design as well as numerous other commercial facilities, entertainment facilities and holiday resort design development. During his time as a space designer he inherited darkroom equipment from an acquaintance, which led him to purchase his first ever single-lens reflex camera (NIKON). The apartment he lived in was renovated into a dark room and he became absorbed in his passion for making black and white photographic prints. After five and a half years his passion led him to leaving his job and pursuing his ambition to become a photographer.

In 1996 Yoshida relocated to New York in the US. He dedicated himself to studying photography on his own while making a living as a scenic designer. Through the introduction of a production coordinator he met on the set of an advertising shoot, he was able to get a job as a freelance photographer’s assistant and get his foot in the door to the world of advertising photography. During this time, master of still life photography, KENJI TOMA took him under his wing and enabled Yoshida to study under a mentor. After 3 years, Yoshida considered changing course to contemporary art. However, soon after becoming an independent photographer he was given the opportunity as his first job, to undertake a global advertising campaign for the luxury jewelry brand Di Modolo. Soon after Yoshida’s photos were chosen for the covers of fashion magazines in New York and Spain, which led to signing with a global photographer agency with offices in New York, Tokyo & London. This directed his career/ business to focus on fashion and beauty advertising.

Yoshida formed a work partnership with a colleague from his assistant days who had just become independent a year after. They went by the trade name of Duo Photographer SHUN+HIDEKI. Simultaneously another of Yoshida’s old colleagues, TOMOI was brought in as a photo retoucher and he set up his postproduction company in New York to take on work from all over the world.

In 2009, Yoshida held his first solo exhibit of folding screens made of photographs printed on traditional Japanese paper. A second solo exhibit titled ‘Voyage Through Infinity’ was held in 2010 and became the doorway
for his dream career in contemporary art. The nature of how time, life and space come together as well as the universality of things that are accidental or inevitable were the themes to his ‘Voyage Through Infinity’ series works of art. These works became the axis for his involvement in group exhibitions, art fairs organized by select galleries and being invited to The Special Japanese Tea Ceremony (Kencha Shiki: tea offering to the gods) Mushanokouji Senke art collection in addition to various other special events.

In 2011, the business advertising team in New York was dissolved and Yoshida set out to work instead on his original work that was not limited to any particular genre. He also returned to his roots of space design and using his past experience started work on flower decoration and display design. Photo work covered a wide range including advertising, private clients, portraits that featured Japanese culture(Japanese horseback archery series etc.), academic photography, conceptual still life photography(selection of 100 vegetables, paper play, play with shadow series etc.) .

In 2017, Yoshida moved base camp to Tokyo and oversaw his art photography research group, HIDEKI YOSHIDA ART and PHOTOGRAPHY. Here he deepened his approach to photography as paintings or installations. His goal was the pursuit of expressing a world through installations made of photographs. Working in diverse areas of photography has led Yoshida to consult on, direct and contribute ideas to projects he is involved in.

In 2018, Yoshida who became known for his achievements, unique work and diversity was the unprecedented choice for the position of VMD Display Design Director of Tokyo Midtown Hibiya project. In 2019, he has taken on the position of VMD project leader and continues work as an Artist/Photographer/Director in contemporary art, photography, and space design.
